What is the difference between call recording connectors

"I will, for sure, buy the 650 Intelligent Recording Interface. The difference is obvious . It looks and sounds as though it will be ideal for me. The web site was excellent and really did help. It is also fantastic customer service!! Thank you very much."

Susan Worsfold

Call recording involves two issues:

1. How do you get the audio from the telephone and
2. What do you record that audio on

  • On this page we will try to help you to understand why on telephone recording connector will give you better audio from the telephone than another. We have written this page because we realise that it can be hard to understand why different connectors are available and at different prices. This difficulty is compounded because every manufacturer advertises even the simplest product as giving "perfect sound quality" etc. You can also watch a short presentation on the key benefits of Retell's Intelligent Recording Interface over basic handset connectors by clicking here.

What to look (or rather listen) for in a recording of a conversation:

Recording with Intelligent Recording Interface
Recording with a less sophisticated connector with automatic level control
Recording with a less sophisticated connector without automatic level control
Listen to the quality of the near person's voice. This would be your own voice, or in a call centre environment, this would be the quality of the agent's voice. With the best connector the near person's voice will be of a clear and bright studio quality. With the best connector the two voices will be recorded at the same level. Simple connectors will record the near person's voice more muffled. Also listen to the balance between the the near and far persons' voices. Less sophisticated connectors will record the far person's voice much louder than the near person's voice. Also listen to the effects of automatic level controls. If ALC is used to balance a quiet near person's voice with a loud far person's voice then, although the two peoples voices will be recorded at similar levels, the near person's voice will have much more background noise.

What to listen for when both people talk at once:

Recording with Intelligent Recording Interface
Recording with a less sophisticated connector
With a sophisticated connector it will be easy to hear both near and far parties voices, even if they both talk at once. With a simple connector relying on an automatic level control in the recorder the level will be adjusted to record the loud far person's voice correctly, which means that the near person's voice will become inaudible.

What to listen for when both people stop talking for a few moments

Recording with Intelligent Recording Interface
Recording with a less sophisticated connector
Listen to the effect of automatic level controls if both people stop talking. A sophisticated connector does not need ALC in the recorder to balance the voices, which means that there is no increase in background noise during silences. If the recording is made with a simple connector relying on ALC in the recorder (or software), then if both people stop talking you will be able to hear the background noise "pump up", falling away when the far person talks again. This "pumping" of the background noise can make the recordings more tiring to listen to.

The above recordings were made using Retell's 957 software with the MPEG Layer-3 Codec at 22,050 Hz 56 kBit/s recorded directly into an MP3 file.

What is automatic level control (ALC)

An automatic level control is a part of the recording electronics that will turn up the volume when a quiet person is talking, and turn down the volume when a loud person is talking. Simple telephone recording connectors send the far person's voice to the recorder much louder than the near person's voice. They rely on an automatic level control in the recorder to balance these levels.

The problem is that when the ALC turns up the level of the quiet near person, they also turn up the level of any background noise. This background noise which will then be clearly audible on the recording will be both background noise in the room, as well as hisses, buzzes and hums.

The other problem is that if both people stop talking the ALC will turn up the volume. THis means that silences become full of noise as the ALC turns up the background noises.
